What is Nordic Walking?
Since the 1930’s, Finnish cross country skiers have used poles for their summer training, then in the 60’s a Finnish PE teacher gave lessons and promoted a competitive sport of walking with ski poles, she promoted ‘walking with poles’ as a physical activity suitable for all. Then in the mid 90’s, a mixture of medical and scientific research in sport, alongside written articles, saw the ten step method being developed, new poles being designed and the official launch of Nordic Walking as we know it today.
Nordic walking has many health benefits which include an all over cardio body work out, helping you to loose weight. With the addition of wellbeing, holistic and mental fitness that being in the great outdoors rings, what ever the weather.
What is the point of the poles?? The power of the poles..!!
Nordic walking poles are different to any other type of walking pole, the power of 2 poles helps to give you a good posture and distribute your weight, it relieves pressure from your knees and back which in turn allows your core muscles to engage and strengthen, this alone produces a stronger and more balanced, safer and purposeful natural walking style.
Walk Nordic believes that Nordic walking goes hand in hand with our body and mind, reaping the rewards of mental wellness and physical fitness which in turns allows us to age strongly.
Nordic walking is a global activity, there are instructors in most parts of the UK offering this to adults and children alike. Nordic walking is a low impact and inclusive for all ages and abilities.
It is a safe and very effective aerobic fitness activity for people who have not exercised in a while.
It is also great for rehabilitation of sports injury and general illness.
For the older adult to help improve confidence in general physical mobility, posture, balance, stability and social wellness,
Fit and well individuals who would like to use it as a recreational exercise or an intensive/sport exercise.
Young people who are not into traditional group sports but would benefit from an age related group exercise or a great training exercise for D of E and mental fitness.
